With recent events surrounding COVID-19, a lot of employees are being asked to work from home. This poses a huge risk to health care facilities such as medical, dental, vision, etc… This is because you are opening a hole in your network for your employees to get in. Remote work will be here to stay for the foreseeable future. After all, if you have employees that can work from home, why not let them?
Why is remote work such a risk?
Your employees need a way to connect in, view documents, update patient files, etc… A very common method to this is Remote Desktop services. Unfortunately, this same technology is how most ransomware attacks happen. Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Gateway can both be brute forced fairly easily.
What are my options for remote work?
There are quite a few so I will just list them.
1. Remote Desktop
2. Remote Desktop Gateway
4. Third party agents such as LogMeIn and GoToMyPC
5. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)
5. Many More!
What do you recommend?
If you want to go the self hosted route, i’d recommend a VPN through your router to a Remote Desktop Gateway. If you want to go the cloud router, then IaaS would be ideal. VPN will secure the connection and your only opening ports to your router. Remote Desktop Gateway allows you to use the simplicity of Remote Desktop while having a single connection point for logging.
What is IaaS?
IaaS is Infrastructure as a Service. This means that instead of you having a local server, you pay a cloud company such as QuickMSP to host your data and you connect to it from anywhere. This is ideal because the hosting provider will have the time and resources to make sure things are as secure as possible! You also save on yearly IT cost’s because you don’t have a $10,000 – $20,000 server being changed every 5 years. Also you aren’t paying a IT company to maintain that server.
Talk to you IT provider or give Quick MSP a call to assist you with your security concerns in this trying time!
